Redefining traditional folding handcraft

PROCESS
Felt is folded in between two paper layers in order to keep the thick material in shape. A wooden structure is used to fix the folds in position, a handcraft that results in unique pieces rather than a mass product.

STRUCTURE
The compressed material is than moved into a steam oven to bake the structure into the sheet. A traditional method known from japanese textile and fashion design.

FINAL PIECE
The final seat is either filled with foam bits or an inflatable ball. The folds create a living memory effect that allows users to sit on it without destroying its shape.

Jule Waibel’s work shows the powerfull combination of old handcraft and modern materials leading to fresh designs. Her patterns create a fascinating third dimension and a living impression as objects seem to have a skin that interacts with its users movement. An experience that will inspire innovation.
